Bay Area Grading & Paving
Hot mix asphalt installed right the first time — driveways, parking lots, private roads, and commercial surfaces across Sonoma, Marin, and Napa Counties.
When it comes to asphalt paving in Northern California, Bay Area Grading & Paving has been the contractor property owners and businesses trust for over 30 years. Owner Shawn Peterson personally oversees every project — from a simple residential driveway in Sebastopol to a multi-acre commercial parking lot in San Rafael.
Asphalt paving involves the installation of hot mix asphalt (HMA) over a properly prepared base of compacted gravel and aggregate. We install asphalt at 3"–5" thickness depending on load requirements — not the thin skim coats that crack in two years. The result is a smooth, durable surface that handles California's freeze-thaw cycles, heavy vehicles, and UV exposure for 20–30 years with proper maintenance.

How We Work
We visit your property, assess subgrade conditions, measure the area, and provide a detailed written estimate — at no charge and with no obligation.
Proper base is everything. We grade the subgrade, install and compact crushed aggregate base (Class 2), and ensure positive drainage before a single pound of asphalt goes down.
Hot mix asphalt is delivered and placed while still at temperature (300°F+). We use mechanical screeds for smooth, consistent thickness and compact with a vibratory roller.
Edges are hand-tamped, final grade is checked, and the surface is rolled to a smooth finish. We clean the site completely before we leave.
New asphalt should cure for 90 days before seal coating. We can schedule a return visit to protect your investment with a quality slurry seal.
